Brothers Fuse Industrial and Furniture Design to Create Funky, Sculptural Aluminium Furniture

FDT Bureau

Jack Fearon, a plumber by trade, and his brother Mark, a boilermaker, ventured into the world of funky and sculptural furniture after specializing in constructing large-scale water trucks. Their transition from industrial fabrication to furniture design began during their trade days when they playfully transformed metal off-cuts from a warehouse tank into their first piece, The Chub—a curvy stool. Here is more on their journey on FURNITURE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (FDT).

Their initial creation, The Chub, ignited their passion, leading to an ever-expanding collection that now includes coffee tables, consoles, and beds, all boasting the same playful silhouette and vibrant hues. Crafted by hand from aluminum, each furniture object ensures durability, sustainability and serves as a canvas for their form experimentation. According to Jack, their love for playing with colours and proportions, with aluminum providing the ideal foundation for their work, aims to create pieces that are both visually captivating and built to stand the test of time.

Despite their background in trades, the Fearon brothers have always nurtured a deep interest in design and creativity. In his early 20s, Jack established a gallery called Comb on the Gold Coast, which evolved into a successful clothing and design company. Drawing from their combined experience in creativity and fabrication, Jack and Mark founded FEARON to create unconventional and playful furniture that stood out from anything else available at the time. While their pieces are undeniably sculptural and visually striking, practical functionality remains a key consideration. Jack emphasizes that their creations are not merely for aesthetic appeal but are intended to be integrated into real-life settings, whether in homes, galleries, restaurants, or hotels, adding an extra touch of charm and personality to these spaces.

Recently, the Fearon brothers have shifted their focus to crafting unique, one-of-a-kind pieces and custom commissions that transcend traditional furniture and stand as bold works of art. Their vision is rooted in the desire for their creations to be cherished for generations to come, with the potential of becoming future antiques.
